Do you know someone that is experiencing a health setback? Whether they are battling an illness, relearning to walk, or recovering from any health issue, a handmade blanket is always a comfort. Crocheting a blanket is a great way to show them that you are thinking about them always, and that you care. Follow along with this free chemo blanket or comfort blanket crochet pattern in multiple sizes.
The third installment of the 2025 Donation Crochet Series is a comfortable and warm crochet blanket pattern in multiple sizes that can be made for someone with a mobility aid, or experiencing a health issue such as chemotherapy or major surgery.
This blanket is made using the Alpine Stitch. This makes for a nice, heavy blanket that can be made to just the right size using the handy chart below. Sizes range from a size just large enough to cover the legs of a person sitting in a wheelchair, to a large size throw. Instructions are included for customizing the size of your blanket further if desired.
For this Comfort Crochet Blanket we are using a worsted weight acrylic yarn. I used Big Twist which has now been discontinued, but you could use Brava Worsted, Caron One Pound, Herrschners Jumbo yarn, Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, or any other size 4 yarn listed here that you like.
Sometimes just the weight of a blanket can be a comfort. It can help ease anxiety during medical appointments and can help induce sleep, among other benefits. This Comfort blanket uses the Alpine Stitch because it is a bit of a yarn eater, meaning that it is heavier than “normal” crochet blankets. It is also warmer and is intended to be a hug of reassurance and a sign of hope for as positive an outcome as one could get. 💖
Crocheting for someone that is undergoing a hard time medically can help to bolster their spirits. And if you’ve experienced this in your own life or the lives of your loved ones, you’ll know that keeping the spirits up is just as much of a battle as getting through the medical portion of it.

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn
-approx. (1800, 2400, 3300, 5200) yards
Crochet hook in size H/5mm
Gauge: 13 sts and 14 rows in 4” square using the Alpine Stitch

Dc = Double Crochet
Fpdc = Front Post Double Crochet

The chains at the beginning of every row do NOT count as stitches.
In the main portion of the pattern (the odd numbered rows), always place the double crochet in the previous row’s Fpdc and place the Fpdc around the dc from 2 rows below.
Pattern:
Row 1: Fdc-(117, 131, 179, 195) (or Ch-(119, 133, 181, 197), dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each to end.) (117, 131, 179, 195)
Row 2: Ch-1, turn, sc in each st to end. (117, 131, 179, 195)
Row 3: Ch-2, turn,* dc in next, Fpdc around st two rows down * repeat between * * to end. Dc in last. (117, 131, 179, 195)
Row 4: repeat row 2 (117, 131, 179, 195)
Row 5: Ch-2, turn, dc in first 2 sts * Fpdc around dc from two rows down, dc in next * repeat between * * until 1 st remains, dc in last. (117, 131, 179, 195)
Row 6: repeat row 2 (117, 131, 179, 195)
Rows 7 through (146, 174, 210, 252): repeat rows 3 through 6 (117, 131, 179, 195)
Row (147, 175, 211, 253): repeat row 3 (117, 131, 179, 195)
Do not fasten off. Rotate blanket clockwise…
Border:
Row 1: Sc evenly down row ends. 3sc in corner st, rotate and sc across blanket bottom. 3sc in corner st and rotate to sc evenly up row ends. 3sc in corner st and rotate to sc across top of baby blanket, 2sc in same as starting st.
Rows 2 through 3 (or more if desired): Sc in each st around, placing 3sc in each corner st.Fasten off using Invisible Join.
